Driving to Malpais

Driving to Mal Pais will take approximately 6 hours.

First you must drive from the San Jose Airport to Puntarenas, which takes about two hours. In Puntarenas you board a car ferry to Paquera for an hour and a half ride across the breathtaking Gulf of Nicoya. Once you arrive in Paquera, follow the street signs to Cobano (about a 45 minute drive from the ferry) and then continue to follow the signage straight to Malpais. As you near the camp you will come down a hill to a 3-way intersection where you will see our Jobbie’s Longboards Camp sign at Franks Place. There is tons of secure and guarded parking available at the camp. It is here that we suggest you leave your car.

Note: Renting a 4×4 is highly recommended. The ferry costs $10 per car, but only the driver can ride the car onto the ferry, all of the other passengers must walk on.
